Walking in Borrowdale
Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District is renowned for its dramatic
scenery. It is a landscape of contrasts. The imposing fells stand
majestically, framing the valley on both sides, whilst ancient
broad leafed woodlands cloak the lower fellsides and fringe the
clear water river. There are walks to suit all abilities, from
gentle riverside strolls to full day treks covering many miles!
Leave your car at the cottage - Thwaite How is ideally located
to walk straight from the door and explore Borrowdale’s footpaths
and fells.
Below are a few walks from Thwaite How in Borrowdale:
Thwaite How to Grange in Borrowdale - a relatively
easy but very picturesque walk which follows the river to the village
of Grange where you can stop for home-made ice cream. You can either
walk back or take the Borrowdale Bus from the bridge. (approx.
2 miles each way)
Thwaite How to Watendlath - a stunning walk on
a well defined path taking you over Brund Fell. You descend to
beautiful
views of Watendlath Tarn where you can take a break at the
cafe. Walk along the valley floor and drop down at Lodore Falls
where you can either walk back following the
road
and
river
or take
the
Borrowdale
Bus. (approx. 8 miles in total)
Thwaite How to High Spy and Dale Head - an energetic
walk taking in some of the higher Lakeland fells. Amazing views over
Borrowdale
and Newlands Valleys. From Dalehead you can drop down to Honister
and walk back down the old coach road or alternatively you can head
over High Spy and drop down from Cat Bells to Grange in Borrowdale
During the high season (April to October) the Honister Rambler bus
service is in operation, providing more scope for planning a day’s
trek. The bus runs through Rosthwaite, calling at Honister, Buttermere
and Newlands. You can select any number of starting points on the
bus route, for an energetic hike back to the cottage over the high
fells. |
