Borrowdale Valley
Borrowdale, near Keswick in Cumbria, is one of the most scenic locations
in the British Isles. It is a popular destination with walkers,
as it is the starting point for many of the high fell walks – Scafell,
Great Gable, Glaramara, High Spy, Dale Head. A drive along the
valley, past the peaceful shores of Derwentwater and through the
much photographed Jaws of Borrowdale, is an exhilarating experience.
Derwentwater is situated at the northern end of the valley, framed
by the hills of Cat Bells. There are five hamlets within the valley – Grange,
Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite, Seathwaite and Seatoller. At the southern
end of the valley is the dramatic Honister Pass, its winding road
climbing sharply upwards flanked by the rugged hillsides, towards
a working slate mine at the top. The descent over Honister leads
to another beautiful area, Buttermere, with its picturesque lake
and charming hamlet.
Keswick is the nearest town and is approximately seven miles from
Rosthwaite. The town has a cinema, shops, galleries, restaurants,
cafes, swimming pools and supermarkets. It is also home to the famous
Theatre by the Lake, the Keswick Launch Company and the Pencil Museum
- graphite was first discovered in Borrowdale and pencils have been
made in Keswick ever since!
